Press Release: NIED Expresses Extreme Disappointment Regarding Federal Study

Toronto, November 25, 2014 – While NIED appreciates that the Standing Committee on the Status of Women undertook a study of “Eating Disorders Among Girls and Women in Canada” over the past year, we are disappointed and frustrated by the Committee’s recommendations.

While the testimonies accurately reflect what over 30 witnesses said and asked for, the recommendations fail to provide direction for concrete action. It was clear to some members of the committee, through the dissenting reports, that this report falls flat.

Eating disorders have the highest mortality rate of all mental health illnesses and affect boys and men, therefore, the study should have been undertaken by the Standing Committee on Health.

Canadians with eating disorders, their families and the medical community asked for a pan-Canadian strategy to address eating disorders, a national database and a robust research program. All are absent from the report, and over half of the 25 recommendations call on the government to only “consider”, “encourage” and “recognize”. That is, to do nothing.

Wendy Preskow, Founder of NIED said:

‘The growing number of Canadians with eating disorders and their families waited anxiously for this report and hoped that it would trigger positive change in their lives. They feel abandoned and let down. It is clear that the Committee understood the reality and severity of these serious mental health conditions, but lacked the courage in making real, substantial and sincere recommendations’.

NIED calls on the Ministers of Health to meet as soon as possible with our organization and other stakeholders, and to put eating disorders on the agenda at the next joint federal/provincial/territorial meeting of Ministers of Health.

*Update: Wendy Preskow was interviewed by Global News about NIED’s response to the Committee’s report. Stay tuned for broadcast date.
